A polynucleotide (I) isolated from Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. dieffenbachiae, is new. A polynucleotide (I) isolated from Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. dieffenbachiae, is new. (I) is: (a) 1588 bp sequence (1), reproduced; (b) any fragment of at least 15 bp from (1); (c) any complement of (a) or (b); or (d) any sequence that hybridizes under stringent conditions with (a)-(c). Independent claims are also included for: (1) primer pairs able to amplify (1) or its fragments of at least 100 bp; and (2) detecting X. axonopodis pv. dieffenbachiae.
