The winding core consists of a main tube (1), preferably of aluminum alloy between 2000 and 4000 mm long, with a plug (2) between 200 and 400 mm long inserted into each end. The plugs can be of the same or a different lightweight material, and the outer surface of each one is shaped to engage with reinforcing ribs (1a) inside the tube. The ribs are e.g. three in number, spaced at 120degrees to one another, and the reinforcing ribs have semi-cylindrical cavities (1a1) to receive fixing pins that hold the plugs in place. The centre of each plug has an aperture (2a) to receive a winding machine drive member and can have two or more recesses (2b) for pins on the same.
