PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating agent comprising a modified EVOH solution having good standing stability and giving a coating film good in gas barrier properties and appearance. SOLUTION: The solution contains (C) a modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer containing 0.3 to 40 mol% structural units (I) and having an ethylene content of 5 to 55 mol%. The coating agent comprises the solution. In structural units (I), R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>are each a hydrogen atom, a 1 to 10C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a 3 to 10C alicyclic hydrocarbon group, or a 6 to 10C aromatic hydrocarbon group, provided that they may be the same or different from each other, that R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>may be bonded to each other, and that R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>may each contain a carboxyl group or a halogen atom.
