PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for advantageously manufacturing a high-molecular-weight cycloolefin copolymer which has a structure wherein structural units based on a norbornene monomer and structural units based on an acrylate monomer are alternatively arranged, which has high heat resistance and low water (moisture) absorbency, and which is excellent in optical characteristics, such as transparency, and is free from a problem such as discoloration, at a lower cost while greatly reducing the usage of a Lewis acid. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a cycloolefin copolymer wherein structural units based on a norbornene monomer are not contiguous to each other, is characterized in that a norbornene monomer (A) and an acrylate monomer (B) are copolymerized in the presence of a Lewis acid in an amount of 0.001 to 1 mol for 100 mol of the acrylate monomer (B) by using a radical polymerization initiator and that at least the monomer (B) is charged in portions or continuously into a Lewis acid or its solution.
