PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a crank angle detector for stopping fuel injection or ignition by determining the rotating direction of a crankshaft even if starting from any crank angle position simultaneously with generating crank angle signals of the crankshaft by one sensor. SOLUTION: This crank angle detector is provided with a measured member mounted to the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine and provided with a plurality of angle position detected parts for every crank angle at equal spaces in a circumferential direction, and a plurality of reference position detecting parts formed by partially lacking the angle position detected parts; a crank angle sensor mounted in proximity to the measured member and outputting the crank angle signals; a cycle detecting means for detecting the cycle of the crank angle signals; a reference position determining means for determining a plurality of reference positions based on the signal cycle; a counting means for counting crank signals to obtain a count value; and a rotating direction determining means for detecting the rotating direction of the crankshaft from the count value counted between the plurality of reference positions.
