PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately provide the residual amount of recording paper set in a sheet feeder. SOLUTION: The control part 102 of a dot impact printer 10 receives signals indicating the set thickness of the recording paper from a linear encoder 81 installed in the sheet feeder and calculates the number of recording sheets set in the sheet feeder by using the thickness of one sheet of the recording paper calculated based on pulse signals outputted from an encoder 17 detecting the rotating angle of a platen gap adjusting motor 53.
