<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make small a space needed for a shutter which protects an image carrier when an image carrier unit, which has the image carrier where a toner image is formed and a support supporting the image carrier and is taken in and out of the image forming apparatus body, is taken out of an image forming apparatus body to move between an opening position and a closure position. <P>SOLUTION: The shutter 35, which retracts from above the image carrier 3 when the image carrier unit 28 is set in the image forming apparatus body, moves horizontally when the image carrier unit 28 is drawn out of the image forming apparatus body to cover the image carrier from above.
