PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a liquid crystal element which makes undesired inversion of liquid crystal molecules hardly possible. SOLUTION: The electrooptical device comprises a chiral smectic liquid crystal which is disposed between a pair of substrates having a scanning electrode group and an information electrode group, respectively, and which has a chevron structure. The chiral smectic liquid crystal exhibits a C2 orientation. The dielectric anisotropy of the chiral smectic liquid crystal is negative and further the threshold value characteristic curve of the chiral smectic liquid crystal exhibits a minimum value. The electrooptical device is also provided with a driving method in which a scanning selection signal is successively applied to each electrode of the scanning electrode group and an information signal containing a selection pulse of a first polarity having a pulse width ofΔT to define the display state of a pixel and pulses with a second polarity placed before and after the selection pulse is continuously applied to each electrode of the information electrode group by inserting a quiescent period shorter thanΔT therebetween.
