PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup element for electronic endoscope in which the core of a signal cable has little chance of causing disconnection when assembling work is performed for fixing the element to an appropriate focal-point position in a shield pipe, and to provide a method of connecting signal cable. SOLUTION: After the core 10a of the signal cable 10 is joined to a terminal 5a disposed on the rear side of the solid-state image pickup element 5 and the space between the image pickup element 5 and a shield 10b is filled with an adhesive 20, the element 5 is fixed to the appropriate focal-point position in the shield pipe 6.
