A file editing and managing apparatuses that allow a common file to be updated in a distributed processing system, a program that realizes these apparatuses, and a recording medium in which the program has been recorded. The contents or forms of an updating made to a common file can be flexibly dealt with at any location by another location. Therefor, there are provided edition environment acquiring means for acquiring, under a file access management, a copy of a file to be edited; interface means for acquiring a request concerning the edition of the copy; and file editing means for providing to the file an edition in accordance with the request. The interface means attempts to cause the copy to reflect the result of the externally provided edition, and outputs the result of this edition with unique attributes.
