<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus to segmentalize images that can be associated with low depth of field image, concerning a digital image technology. <P>SOLUTION: A method of extracting a subject of interest from an image initiates with defining an image feature space based upon frequency information. Then, the image feature space is filter processed to smooth both focused regions and defocused regions while maintaining respective boundaries associated with the focused regions and the defocused regions.
