PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for replacing a cache line in a computer system having a set associative cache memory. SOLUTION: In this method, a ranking guideline is established by means of a writable cache replacement control array 430. This guideline can be dynamically changed when data are written in the cache replacement control array 430. Various cache line conditions are ranked according to the ranking guideline, and if a cache error occurs, the cache line in the highest rank in these ranks is replaced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
