PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase hit rate and enhance the performance of a disk by controlling the way of look-ahead according to how data are accumulated in a cache when rotational delay time is allocated to look-ahead. SOLUTION: When rotational delay time, which occurs if a read command received during look-ahead is a cache error and seeking is required for the process of the read command received, is allocated to the process of looking ahead of a leading read command and to the process of looking ahead of the read command received, a prereading area can be determined whenever necessary so that data in an area already existing in the cache are not preread.
