PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element for a liquid crystal display device to be used as a large-sized screen display for a video projector or the like, and to provide a method of forming an alignment layer constituting the liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element 10 constituted by sealing a liquid crystal 13 with negative dielectric anisotropy between a pair of substrates 11, 15 one of which is a transparent substrate 11 transmitting light, inorganic alignment layers 12, 14 making a pretilt angleαof the liquid crystal 13 to be 3 to 13°are disposed on the respective substrate sides of the pair of substrates sealing the liquid crystal inside.
