PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cloth extending method and a cloth extending method in which load of a chuck-retaining part (both end corners) of cloth can be reduced in extending operation (particularly in suction by a sucking apparatus) and the cloth can be transferred to the after-process side in a state beautifully (linearly) extended without bending the upper side part of the cloth. SOLUTION: In the clothe-extending machine, the cloth S having a large area, e.g. a sheet is hung up to a prescribed height position while retaining both end corners of one side of the cloth S and upper side part Sb of cloth is extended to left and right directions by separating each retention part of the hanging-up cloth S1to left and right and the upper side-extending cloth S2is beautifully extended by sucking the cloth to the lower direction. The load of retention part of both end corners of the cloth can be reduced and the upper side part of the cloth can linearly and beautifully be extended by retaining the center vicinity of the upper side Sb of the upper side-extending cloth S2by a retention apparatus 5 and then sucking the upper side-extending cloth S2to the lower direction.
