A data processing device can reproduce video and audio, by synchronizing them, from an optical disc where video data and audio data are recorded in different regions. Each of the regions consists of one or more unit areas. The data processing device includes a reproduction control section for reading video data and audio data and instructing reproduction of the video and audio according to the data which has been read out, a head for reading out the data for each of the unit areas according to the instruction, and an audio buffer and a video buffer for accumulating the audio data and video data which have been read out. The reproduction control section instructs reading of audio data into the audio buffer from a predetermined unit area and after this, instructs reading of video data from n unit areas into the video buffer, which video data can be reproduced during a first time equivalent to the maximum time required for head movement multiplied by (n + 2) (n is an integer not smaller than 2) and a second time required for reading the audio data from the next unit area.
