PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a securities discrimination device capable of reducing the processing load of a discrimination means, of accelerating processing, and of reducing costs. SOLUTION: In the securities discrimination device for reading out printed characters, images, watermark images, etc. included in securities and discriminating the sort of the securities, the authenticity of the securities, the existence of damage, etc. while carrying the securities, only the external information of the securities which is small information is sent to a CPU 24 which is a discrimination means and the image information of the securities which is large information is temporarily stored in an image memory 23. The CPU 24 specifies an area to be discriminated on the basis of the external information, reads out only the image information of the specified area to be discriminated from the image memory 23 and discriminates the securities on the basis of the read image information of the area to be discriminated.
