PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an apparatus for detecting the amount of steering of a steering device which steers steering wheels by moving a drive rod. SOLUTION: The drive rod 40 is provided with a part to be detected 90 of which the cross-sectional shape forms a circle centered at the center line of relative rotation to a housing 42 and the diameter is gradually and linearly reduced along its longitudinal direction. The housing 42 is provided with a Hall element type sensor 92 opposed to the part to be detected 90. When the drive rod 40 is moved in its longitudinal direction to steer the steering wheels, the location of the drive rod 40 is acquired from an electric signal corresponding to the relative locations in the longitudinal direction of the part to be detected 90 and the sensor 92 and a zero-point specific value, and the absolute amount of steering is acquired. Since the distance between the part to be detected 90 and the sensor 92 does not change even when the drive rod 40 and the housing 42 are relatively rotated, the occurrence of detection error is suppressed. By also using an apparatus 84 for detecting the relative amount of steering including pulse rotors 110 and 112 and electromagnetic pickups 114 and 116, the absolute amount of steering is highly accurately acquired by counting the number of pulses after the determination of a zero point.
