PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small sized switch while having excellent breaking performance by using a physical adsorbent and a functional material such as a hydrogen-storing alloy. SOLUTION: An arc 30 is generated between a fixed arc contact 11 and a moving arc contact 24 during current breaking. A temperature in a pressure-accumulating space S1 is rapidly increased due to the generation of a gas flow 32f with a high temperature in an arc portion and the take-in of the gas flow 32f into the space S1. A temperature of the functional material 41 disposed in the space S1 is also increased and when the temperature reaches a temperature higher than its critical temperature, since a CO<SB>2</SB>gas 42 is exhausted from the functional material 41, pressure in the space S1 is further rapidly increased in addition to mechanical compression by a fixed piston 27. By the high pressure in the space S1, the SF<SB>6</SB>gas preexisted in the space S1 is strongly sprayed to the arc 30 together with CO<SB>2</SB>gas generated from the functional material 41.
