IMAGE COMPRESSION APPARATUS, IMAGE COMPRESSION METHOD, AND DIGITAL STILL CAMERA

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image compression apparatus which uses a configuration of a moving picture compression circuit and can use the configuration even at recording a still picture without waste, and to provide an image compression method and a digital still camera.

SOLUTION: The image compression apparatus 1 is provided with: a dct conversion section 1 for converting an input image signal into a frequency region; a quantization section 2 for quantizing the converted data (or luminance signal data); an LPF section 3 for passing only low frequency data among the converted data; a selector 4 for selectively switching the low frequency data passing through the LPF 3 or a color difference signal; an idct / dct conversion section 5 for converting the color difference signal into the frequency region or inversely converting the low frequency data into a time region; a sampler 7 for extracting data at a position corresponding to an interleaved amount from a pixel component of the low frequency data and outputting a reduced image; and a quantizer 8 for quantizing the data resulting from the color difference signal converted into the frequency region and applying high speed compression to still picture data (together with the luminance signal data).
