PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a restartability in an engine provided with a variable valve mechanism to change lift quantity of an intake valve capable of avoiding engine failure in quick deceleration with large lift quantity due to response delay of lift quantity control so as to secure restartability. SOLUTION: When change quantityΔNe per unit time for engine speed Ne (rpm) is more than a prescribed value, a quick speed reduction state is determined. In quick speed reduction, the maximum limiter to limit target lift quantity is set smaller asΔNe is larger for changing the target lift quantity to be smaller. Reduction change speed of lift quantity by feedback control is thus increased, thereby response delay of the lift quantity change is reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
