PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus which can realize sufficient display contrast even when an image display medium using color particles is driven by simple matrix driving. SOLUTION: Black particles 20 and white particles 22 having different electrification characteristics from each other are sealed between a display substrate 12 and a back substrate 14. Column electrodes 16 in a plurality of lines are disposed on the opposing face of the display substrate 12 to the back substrate 14, while row electrodes 17 in a plurality of lines are disposed on the opposing face of the back substrate 14 to the display substrate 12. The maximum voltage applicable between the column electrode 16 and the row electrode 17 in an image part where the particles are required to move can be increased by applying a voltage near the maximum voltage for stopping particles, at which the particles are barely suppressed to move, on between the column electrode 16 and the row electrode 17 in a non-image part where particles are not required to move.
