<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select a suitable network corresponding to the present position of a portable information terminal to be connected to an access point for the network without a trouble, and avoid the useless operation of a radio communication part to suppress the consumption of a battery. <P>SOLUTION: A GPS receiver 13 fixes the present position of a portable information terminal 1. A controller 16 compares the present position with the position information of a previously registered access point (a radio LAN base station) to be connected. If the access point locates near the present position of the portable information terminal 1, it waits for receiving a beacon signal from the access point with a radio LAN adapter 12 set to power on, and when it receives the beacon signal within a specified time, the controller executes radio LAN connection to the access point through the radio LAN adapter 12.
