摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength conversion element in which power saving is realized by reducing current to be injected into a semiconductor optical amplifier and high speed operation of 100 GHz or higher is also realized. <P>SOLUTION: The wavelength conversion element 30 is provided with first and second optical waveguides 27, 28, third and fourth optical waveguides 24b, 26b respectively connected to ends of both first and second optical waveguides and extending from the respective connections to mutually opposite directions and first and second semiconductor optical amplifying parts 20a, 20b respectively inserted into the first and second optical waveguides. Furthermore, the wavelength conversion element 30 is provided with a fifth optical waveguide 26a between the fourth optical waveguide and the first semiconductor optical amplifier and connected to the first optical waveguide, a light source 22 to output light and a sixth optical waveguide 24a of which one end part is connected to the light source and the other end part is connected to the fifth optical waveguide via the interposed first semiconductor optical amplifying part and to the first optical waveguide on the opposite side. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p>
