Isoquinoline compounds represented by the following general formula (I) or (II) and their optically active isomers, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, water adducts thereof, hydrates thereof and solvates thereof. Preventives and/or remedies for diseases caused by hyperfunction of poly(ADP-ribose) synthase which contain the above compounds and poly(ADP-ribose) synthase inhibitors containing the above compounds.
