[Also in Division B8] A tetrahedral container is formed from.a tube of flexible material, two opposite edges of the tetrahedron being formed by seams securing opposite faces of the tube in planes perpendicular to each other, one of the seams being incomplete to provide an opening into the container. The incomplete seam 3a, 3b is provided with further seams extending perpendicular thereto to provide a tubular inlet passage which is reinforced by a ring 7 and flaps 5, 6, the latter being pierced by a hole 8. Apparatus for making the container from a tube 10, which may be formed from flat material, fed from roll 13 by rollers 11, 12 which also serve to trap air in the tube to separate the surfaces, comprises heat sealing jaws 15, 16 to form seams 3a, 3b and seams 18, 20, a welding tool 22 and punch 23 forming flaps 5, 6 and hole 8, knives 25, 26 for severing the tube upstream of the seams 18, 20, means 32 for flattening the tube downstream of the seams to extend in a plane perpendicular to that of the seams and heat sealing jaws 37 sealing the tube in that second plane. After severing by knives 25, 26 further feed rollers 27, 28 to feed the container to a holder 30, a separator 31 connected to a vacuum source separates the walls of the tube and fingers of members 32 pivot to engage the tube walls and extend the tube as shown. The pivotable folding members 33, 34, which are carried on a table rotatable about the axis of 35, pivot inwards to fold the container and pull the free end thereof off the fingers of members 32. The upper bar of holder 30 moves away and table rotates about the axis of 35 to position the container at station 36, where the jaws 37 form the seal in the second plane and mandrel 38 places the ring 7 within tube 4, where it is secured by heating appliance 40. The container may be made of heat sealable plastics or plastics laminate or paper coated with heat sealable plastics. |
