A disk-type recording and/or reproducing device has detecting portions (71, 72) for detecting the edge of a disk (52, 53), the detecting portions (71, 72) being provided on the inner side, at a lower edge of an oblong opening (12) in a front panel (11) in a manner left-right symmetrical relative to the center of the opening. The device also has a detecting portion (73) for detecting a reflecting foil (60) adhered to a lower face of a tray (13) and having absent portions (61, 62). When the disk (52, 53) is placed out of position, the combination of detection outputs of these three detecting portions detect the fact and stops a retracting motion of the tray (13). This prevents the disk from falling inside a disk drive when the disk is not placed at a correct position on the tray (13).
