<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an artifact reduction method with which an artifact is reduced without blurring desired image contents for automatic matching to a compression level, such that a degree of artifact reduction is matched with significance of the artifact. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for eliminating the artifact in the digital image decoded from a compressed representation of an image, pixels of the digital image are segmented into low-detail pixels, high-detail pixels and boundary pixels and a single nonlinear filtering method such as a sigma filtering method is then applied to the pixels in the digital image. Different filter parameters are selected for the low-detail, high-detail and boundary pixels, thereby performing artifact elimination enhanced rather than a conventional method. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
