PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent abrupt variation in the density or color tone when an ink cartridge is replaced. SOLUTION: In the ink jet recorder where ink is supplied from ink cartridges 20-23 to ink jet recording heads 6 and 7 for ejecting an ink drop through channels, buffer tanks 12-15 having a capacity larger than the quantity of ink being consumed when ink filling operation of the recording head is performed are connected between the ink jet recording heads 6 and 7 and the ink cartridges 20-23.
