Water-based emulsifier-wax gels comprise skin-identical free sphingoid bases, an emulsifier, a waxy thickener, water and optionally other additives. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of the gels by melting together the sphingoid bases, emulsifier, thickener and optional additives, mixing with water at elevated temperature, homogenizing the mixture and cooling to room temperature while stirring; (2) oil-in-water emulsions prepared using the gels.
