Storage and retrieval unit (3) comprises a support wagon (4) moved by a drive on at least one horizontal support rail (6), a lifting platform (8) moved by the support wagon, a lifting device moving the lifting platform relative to the support wagon in a vertical direction, and a stabilizing device preventing lateral tilting of the lifting platform. The lifting device has at least two tension devices (7) for suspending the lifting platform on the support wagon. The stabilizing device has a stabilizing wagon (11) moved by its own drive along at least one guide rail (16) arranged parallel to the support rail a vertical distance apart. The stabilizing device also has a rigid connecting structure (17) with a horizontal extension component hinged on the lifting platform and on the stabilizing wagon, and a control changing the horizontal distance between the lifting platform and the stabilizing device when the height of the lifting platform is changed so that the lifting pla tform can carry out only the desired, especially vertical, movement relative to the support wagon.
