A method for ascertaining a parameter for an instantaneous maximum frictional coefficient between vehicle tires and a roadway which is computed from the relationship of frictional force to wheel-reaction force for a vehicle. A force, torque or variable derived from it is ascertained which effects one part of the steering system of the vehicle and the parameter for the frictional coefficient is determined on the basis of the ascertained force or of the torque or of the variable derived from it. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) A computer program. (B) A device for determining the parameter of instantaneous maximum frictional coefficient.
