To give a floating change of printing plates, in a sheet-fed offset printing press, the drive for the plate cylinders (4.1-4.3) has a separate drive motor (8.1,8.2), which is synchronized with the main drive wheel train of the press. The inking unit (2.2) and the wetting unit (3.2) are disengaged form the plate cylinder. The plate cylinder is displaced from the blanket cylinder (5,2), the blanket cylinder is separated from the printing cylinder (6.2), and inking rollers and wetting rollers are set back from the plate cylinder. The printing plate is removed and the new plate is clamped in place by the printing plate change unit (12.2), for the inking station and wetting station to ink the new plate, and the cylinders are returned to their original positions against each other.
