Gas diffusion electrode (4) comprises a gas diffusion layer (1) and a catalyst layer (2). The electrode has a structure for influencing its physical properties formed by a concentration gradient (8) of a chemical material. The concentration gradient is formed parallel to the upper side of the gas diffusion electrode and vertical to the upper side of the gas diffusion electrode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Process for the production of a gas diffusion electrode; and (2) Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell containing the gas diffusion electrode.
