The tongs comprise a scissor mechanism with four lever arms forming an articulated square. The two long lever arms (6,7) are displaceable relative to each other at their intersection (8) and are connected together at their free end areas (12,13) through a connecting rod (9) attached to the long arms so that when the two short lever arms (3,4) spread out and move inwards the long arms are pivoted in opposite directions about the articulation points (10,11) of the connecting rods.
