Process for preparation of simvastatin

In the present invention, there is described a novel process for the preparation of simvastatin of the general formula I and the derivatives thereof by acylation of the protected derivative of the general formula II in the presence of imidazole and dimethylaminopyridine in an organic solvent. The invention can be used in pharmaceutical industry for the preparation of simvastatin, which is used as HMG-CoA reductase for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.
