The device comprises: a machining head (1) with a laser source and an optical system for focusing a laser beam; a support (S) for the workpiece (P) to be machined; a detection system for determining the distance between the laser head (1) and the workpiece being machined; a control unit (9) connected to the detection system and an actuator for controlling the position of the head with respect to the workpiece. The detection system comprises at least one ultrasonic transducer (7), the signal of which is used to control said position.
