PURPOSE: A video communication terminal and an operating method thereof are provided to separate an ROI(Region of Interest) from a background region, and to convert a background image into other background designated by a user, or to code the ROI only with high picture quality, so that the user can easily designate each communication mode in real time. CONSTITUTION: The first abbreviated button executes an ROI-based bit rate control mode. The second abbreviated button executes a background conversion service mode by selecting a background image. The third abbreviated button converts the ROI-based bit rate control mode and/or the background conversion service mode into a general mode. The background image is matched with a hot key. When the hot key is inputted, the mode is converted into the background conversion service mode based on the background image designated in the selected hot key.
