PURPOSE: A laundry amount detecting method is provided to improve washing efficiency by automatically controlling washing, rinsing and dehydrating time and washing pattern, and to prevent overload to the motor by controlling differentially corresponding to opening of the door and increase of the laundry amount during washing. CONSTITUTION: The dry laundry amount is detected in inputting an operation key by a user, and water is supplied(S11,S12). Washing course is performed after supplying water, and the amount of the wet laundry is detected with the specific period(S13,S14). The amount of the wet laundry is detected again regardless of the specific period in detecting opening of the door over the predetermined time during washing(S15,S16). Washing, rinsing and dehydrating time and washing pattern are controlled with deciding change of the laundry amount in case of the redetected wet laundry amount not to be equal to the detected wet laundry amount(S17,S18).
