PURPOSE: A laundry amount detecting device of a drum washing machine and a method thereof are provided to detect the laundry amount accurately by controlling the washing pattern with detecting rotation time to the setting position in stopping the motor and pulse width of voltage, and to improve washing efficiency by setting washing time, rinsing number and dehydration time according to the detected laundry amount. CONSTITUTION: A laundry amount detecting device of a drum washing machine comprises a key input unit(10) inputting demand of a user; a microcomputer(20) deciding washing pattern by detecting rotation of a motor(60) to the predetermined position in inputting the command through the key input unit, and outputting the control signal; a load driving unit(50) actuating the motor according to the control signal from the microcomputer; a pulse detecting unit(30) detecting pulse in rotating the motor; a timer(21) counting rotation time of the motor; and a power unit(40) supplying power to the microcomputer.
