PURPOSE: A switching device for a vacuum cleaner is provided to prevent the damage of a switch by installing an auxiliary elastic member between the inner surface of a knob and a switch lever. CONSTITUTION: A toggle switch(42) protrudes at the bottom of a mounting groove(40) formed at the upper surface of a cleaner body. A knob(50) is movably mounted to the mounting groove, and operates the toggle switch. A hollow boss(54) is formed at the inner surface of the knob. A main elastic member(44) is installed between the inner surface of the knob and the bottom of the mounting groove, and encloses the boss. A switch lever(56) is installed at the boss, and includes an insertion unit(56a) movably inserted into the boss, and a head unit(56b) pressing the top of the toggle switch when the knob moves under the mounting groove. An auxiliary elastic member(58) is installed between the inner surface of the knob and the switch lever.
