PURPOSE: A hemostatic wound dressing containing aldehyde-modified polysaccharide and hemostatic agents is provided to control and/or alleviate a bleeding in an effective time. CONSTITUTION: The hemostatic wound dressing comprises a wound contacting surface, a biocompatible aldehyde-modified polysaccharide and a wound contacting substrate comprising a hemostatic agents covalently conjugated to the aldehyde-modified polysaccharide and containing aldehyde reactive residue. The substrate is fiber, fabric, sponge, foam, film, bead, gel, powders or a formulation thereof. The aldehyde-modified polysaccharide includes aldehyde-modified cellulose, alkyl cellulose, hydroxy alkyl cellulose, alkylhydroxy alkyl cellulose, cellulose sulfate, a salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose and so on.
