PURPOSE: A washing machine and a control method thereof are provided to secure durability of the washing machine by sensing water temperature immediately after drainage, controlling the dehydrating speed, and preventing the washing machine from rotating at high speed in a state of high temperature. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine comprises a key input part(201) for inputting a washing course and an action command desired by a user; a temperature-sensing part(203) for sensing the temperature of washing water in a drainage stroke; a microcomputer(205) executing washing and rinsing strokes according to the washing course selected by the user if the action command is input through the key input part, and controlling the dehydrating speed of a dehydrating stroke progressing after the rinsing stroke according to the temperature of the washing water sensed through the temperature-sensing part if the rinsing stroke is finished; and a washing motor(207) the driving speed of which is varied according to a control signal of the microcomputer.
