PURPOSE: A system for automatically managing a network interface and a method therefor are provided to assign codes for identifying a specific target connected with an interface of a network equipment to interface descriptions, and to manage a network based on the assigned code, thereby securing data accuracy without modifying registration information. CONSTITUTION: Many network equipments(210) have plural MIBs(Management Information Bases)(212,214,216) that assign codes for identifying connected targets to descriptions of each equipment(211,213,215). A network management system(220) collects interface information by periodically polling the MIBs(212,214,216), compares the collected information with registered information based on the assigned codes, and automatically modifies and manages registered interface information. A user interface(230) inquires about the interface information on a specific target of the network management system(220), and displays an inquiry response on a screen.
