PURPOSE: A washing machine for measuring the hardness of water and a hardness measuring method are provided to measure the hardness of the supplied water when a user inputs a hardness checking order by mounting an electrode sensor to the lower part of a washing tub to make the user check the hardness of the water before starting a washing process. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine for measuring the hardness of water is composed of an electrode sensor(4) mounted to the lower end of a washing tub(3) to measure the hardness of water supplied into the washing tub; a key input unit having a hardness checking button for inputting an order operating the electrode sensor; a microcomputer for changing a value measured by the electrode sensor into a hardness value by operating the electrode sensor in operating the key input unit; and a display unit for displaying the hardness value computed by the microcomputer.
