PURPOSE: A method for operating an image forming device in an electronic copier is provided to drive an image forming device even when CRUM(Customer Replacement Unit Monitor) information is not recorded, and to check whether a replaced image forming device is a qualified device by confirming the CRUM information, then to drive the image forming device, so that a semiconductor chip recording the CRUM information thereon does not have to be installed. CONSTITUTION: When an electronic copier is powered on(S11), an MCU confirms whether an image forming device is usable(S12). If so, the MCU confirms whether CRUM information is contained in the image forming device(S16). If not, the MCU confirms whether the image forming device is mounted as confirming a toner(S19). If the toner is contained, the MCU drives the image forming device to perform a copying process(S25). The MCU confirms whether the number of copying papers arrives at the number of initially set copying papers(S26). If not, the MCU confirms whether a toner off-signal input time is more than 1600ms(S27). If so, the MCU confirms whether the input time is more than 2300ms(S28). If so, the MCU confirms whether the input time is more than 16000ms(S29). If so, the MCU outputs a message to exchange the image forming device on a display(S30), and records image forming device operation information in a memory(S31). The MCU recognizes the CRUM information recorded in the image forming device, and drives the image forming device(S32).
