Operating an internal combustion engine with a catalyst to prevent overheating of the catalyst by controlling the lambda value of the engine

Operating an internal combustion engine comprising an exhaust gas system containing with at least one catalyst. The value of lambda for the engine is regulated as a function of temperature of the exhaust gases or their components (TEMPKRIT) at at least one critical point in exhaust gas system. The temperature of the exhaust gases is lowered when components pass a preset temperature at the critical point in the exhaust system. Operating an internal combustion engine (10) which comprises an exhaust gas system containing an exhaust gas purification system with at least one catalyst. The value of lambda for the engine is regulated as a function of a modelled or measured temperature of the exhaust gases or their components (TEMPKRIT) at at least one critical point in the exhaust gas system. The temperature of the exhaust gases is lowered when the components pass a preset temperature at the critical point in the exhaust system. The value of preset temperature is fixed as a function of the duration and/or level of a load at a temperature which reduces the life and applied to the exhaust system.
