Surface treatment of metal workpieces coated with a passivated zinc layer before coating with rubber comprises immersing the workpiece for at least 30 seconds in an aqueous finishing bath of pH 7-9 and containing 10-40 wt.% organosilicon corrosion inhibitor and 10-45 wt.% organic adhesive. The workpiece is then removed from the bath and dried with hot air at 60-80 degrees C for about 15 minutes. Independent claims are given for: (a) a finishing bath used in the above surface treatment process; and (b) a metal workpiece having a dark-colored coating 8-15 microns thick, and prepared by the above surface treatment process.
