Composition for dyeing keratinic fibers comprises a heterocyclic dialdehyde of formula (I) and a nitrogen compound of formula (II): R = 5- to 30-membered mono- or polycyclic heterocyclic group that contains one or more heteroatoms (N, S, O and/or P) and is optionally substituted with halo, 1-4C alkyl, OH, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkylthio, NH2, mono- or di(1-4C alkyl)amino, 2-5C alkanoyl, CHO, 1-4C alkoxycarbonyl, NO2, sulfonato, ammonio, tri(1-4C alkyl)ammonio, imidazolio, pyridinio and benzothiazolio; R1-R3 = H, OH, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-30C aliphatic (optionally substituted with OH, NH2 or halo), 6-50C aryl, or 5- to 30-membered mono- or polycyclic heterocyclyl optionally substituted with halo, 1-4C alkyl, OH, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkylthio, NH2, mono- or di(1-4C alkyl)amino, 2-5C alkanoyl, CHO, COOH, NO2, sulfonato. Independent claims are also included for: (1) dyeing keratinic fibers by applying a (I)-containing composition and a (II)-containing composition to the fibers, either separately or after mixing; (2) kit comprising a (I)-containing composition and a (II)-containing composition in separate compartments.
