The machine has two main interacting components (1, 2) inside a housing (3). At least one of the main components is a rotary helicoid piston or motor rotor having a variable characteristic in at least one of its portions, i.e. its pitch, the direction of the pitch, its inner or outer radius, or the thickness of its spirals, giving different levels of compression in its compression, combustion and expansion sections. The rotary piston interacts, for example, with a second rotary piston, with its variable pitch spiral forming compartments (5, 6, 7) of different volumes along its length. Variants of the design can have a rotary piston interacting with a spiral inner surface in the housing or have pistons of varying radius.
